FTN threatens Brady

Thursday, Mar 16, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

The Family Taxpayers Network threatens Bill Brady via one of its online publications.

Mr. Brady just needs to understand that if Topinka does win on Tuesday, and Brady finishes no better than third – his name is Mud. He’s done. And he WILL have a Primary challenge for his State Senate seat in 2008.

Some sins are just too egregious to forget. And if Topinka wins on Tuesday – our Illinois Party is officially dead – at least until Topinka loses to Blagojevich in November. So there will be a lot of time for holding the duplicitous accountable.

The FTN even posits that Brady is a plant.

If Bill Brady isn’t in cahoots with Judy Baar Topinka and staying in the race just to help her win by splitting the conservative vote – then why has Brady so frequently attacked only Jim Oberweis? […]

If Bill Brady isn’t deliberately playing the Spoiler to help Topinka – why does he badmouth Jim Oberweis and constantly misrepresent his positions – but never has a negative word to say about Topinka, the incumbent frontrunner?

Why did pro-gay, pro-abortion, pro-feminist Topinka say in the last televised debate that if she had to vote for one of the other candidates – it would be Bill Brady?

Why after recently calling her Primary opponents “morons,” did Topinka quickly amend her public insult to let only Brady off the hook?

No offense to FTN, but when has that group ever defeated an incumbent Republican in a legislative primary, let alone someone as locally popular as Bill Brady?

Also, what if Brady finishes in second place and FTN’s preferred (and financially backed) candidate Jim Oberweis finishes third? Does that mean FTN should be banished from the face of the earth? Should Jack Roeser be forced to stop contributing to political campaigns forever? [Hat tip to a commenter.]

In light of this news, I’m writing Brady a check and putting his bumper sticker on my BMW.

How ridiculous is that !!! ?? What is with these people ??? I would think that thought pattern is ludicrious let alone plain “nuts” !! Talk about the “Big Lie Theory” !!! Oby is a “has been” & they just can’t quite figure it out !! Oby ought to leave the race & give true conservastives & ALL GOP a chance & a real candidate. BB has been campaigning in one way or another for 14 months plus !!! Looks like someone left the gates open again ! People will finish as they finish … it’s called voting & peoples choice …. perhaps you’ve heard of it !?

Brady will survive Jack Roeser … why … because EVERYONE survives the “wrath” of FTN and Jack Roeser. That basement with the one big lamp, and moist brick walls dripping, and HAM Radios blaring will get colder and colder come March 21st. “Blue Lighting, this is Green Wagon, we need to run someone against Brady, I repeat, we need to run someone against Brady, over!”

FTN absolutely amazes me. Sticking by your conservative principles is one thing, but backing Jim Oberweis in this primary is an act of absolute insanity. People like Jack Roeser and the mental-midgets from RYP that he’s currently employing should be supporting Bill Brady in this race because he has not only the conservative credentials but one important quality that Jim Oberweis doesn’t have: electability in November. Brady should drop out and endorse Oberweis so Oberweis can be slaughtered by Blagojevich in November?

Someone - be they from FTN or the Oberweis camp - please explain to me how Jim Oberweis isn’t textbook unelectable after:
    - the two disastrous campaigns he’s run already
    - the level of complete revilement he reached after those delightfully tasteless ads he ran on illegal immigration on ‘04
    - the delectably disgusting “joke” be made about tracking illegals like animals
    - his unfavorable ratings are at 38% according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and they certainly aren’t trending south

Please, someone tell me how Oberweis isn’t completely unelectable against Blagojevich. And try to do it logically, without the Kool-Aid moustache gracing your upper lip.

  5. - Ring Ring - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 4:22 pm:

Team Oberweis is deeply paranoid — everyone who isn’t with them is in league with everyone else who isn’t with them. Circle the wagons is no way to win a race.

  6. - grand old partisan - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 4:26 pm:

Bottom line: Oberweis and his people know that he can’t win. The only way for them to save face is to hope and pray for a second place finish and then blame it on Brady. I think we’ve just scene the foundation for that strategy being poured.

  18. - Minion - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 5:07 pm:

FTN is really dumb. If they had any brains they would go with Brady and drown Obie in milk. After Judy, Brady is the guy that scares me the most as a Dem. He reminds me a lot of Reagan. I disagreed wholeheartedly with his policies but personally felt a warmth coming from his personality.

Brady also has a future, something I think none of the other GOP candidates has at this point (especially not Obie).

Brady is the only hope and my new hero for conservative Republicans in our state.

I hope the rest of my fellow conservatives will dump the facists and vote Brady

  25. - Elect Brady - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 6:57 pm:

Rick, you hit it right on the money.

FTN has some nerve insisting that they can crown the “conservative” winner, particularly on the grounds of ethics, when FTN actually endorsed both GEORGE RYAN and JESSE WHITE in 1998.

Their vindictive power-politics threat is right in line with everything they supposedly denounce.

I hope this convinces conservatives who have thrown in with Obie to ditch him and vote for Brady.

  26. - YNM - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 7:01 pm:

here’s the best line from their “editorial”:
“If one candidate has to go, it should be the one who has been the most dishonest, the most hypocritical, done the most attacking – and the one who is farthest behind. That means Bill Brady on all counts.”

Really? I don’t even think the casual observer who is not behind Brady would say he has been the most dishonest, the most hypocritcal or done the most attacking.

    Can anyone say “fake headlines”?

    Can anyone say “JBT-bashing”?

    Can anyone say “flip-flopper”?

Come on … this stuff is ridiculous. But I like it … for one reason … it only gives Brady even more lift. People just don’t have a taste for this stuff.

And Winnerscircle … wha-huh? What great questions were they asking that no one here is answering? Please, enlighten me … enlighten all of us.

  28. Pingback IlliniPundit.com » Blog Archive » Another Reason to Vote for Brady - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 7:34 pm:

[…] Now Oberweis’ backers are threatening him with a Primary for daring to run for Governor. […]

  29. - Old Elephant - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 7:34 pm:

I hardly know how to begin.

A: Judy Baar Topinka would win a two-way primary race with Jim Oberweis. Any reasonable division of the polling numbers shows that. I don’t want to take up the space here that would be needed to go through every possible slicing and dicing of the votes. Any objective look at the polling numbers shows that in a two-race way Topinka would be over 50% and Oberweis would be under. (One small illustration: Even with two other conservatives in the race, Topinka is still picking up 25% of the voters who consider themselves “Very Conservative”) So, the assertion that Brady is somehow a “spoiler” (and Ron Gidwitz is not) is absurd.

B: Any Republican candidate is going to be the underdog in the general election. That doesn’t mean a Republican can’t win, it just means that Blagojevich starts with an advantage. Oberweis would lose on the scale of Keyes. Topinka, Brady or Gidwitz would all at least be in the hunt, each for different reasons. So, any “spin” that Oberwies would be a better general election candidate is just that: “spin.”

C: FTN is going to find a primary challenger in Bloomington in 2008 to run to the RIGHT of Brady? Good luck with that.

D: It’s time to ban two words from the Republican vocabulary: RINO and “Combine.” Basically, RINO means anyone who disagrees with the person using the phrase. “Combine” apparently means anyone who has any real life experience in getting people elected.

E: Maybe the real conspirators are FTN? Maybe this is just a plot on their part to raise Brady’s name ID, set him apart from the pack and demonstrate that he is independent of millionaire suburban power brokers?

  34. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 8:50 pm:

Jack once served a very good purpose — keeping the conservative voice alive in the Republcan Party in this state, when it didn’t have one. Now, Jack has finally lost it. He threatens the conservatives in his party, far more than he attacks liberals.

It also has to do with whom he surrounds himself with these days, Doug, Kathy, Joe, etc. These people don’t know what it takes to win, as they’ve never done it. They are concerned with capturing power. Power that doesn’t exist.

Bill Brady is a fine candidate and I wish he were the only one running for governor in the GOP primary. He’s just what the party needs to bring the unity that we’ve not had in years. I admit, I don’t like JBT and I don’t like Oberweis. Judy has been a fine public servant, but I don’t think she has what it takes to be Blago. Oberweis changes his positions on issues as often as he decides to run for a new office. Sometimes his positions on issues are correct, but he frames them so terribly, he ends up hurting himself!

Bill Brady is the future of the GOP in Illinois. If Jack wants to run someone against him, I say, bring them on. I will personally go to Bloomington to work for Bill Brady myself when that day comes.

Jack–it’s time to hang it up and call it a day.

  36. - FrustratedRepublican - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 8:57 pm:

Mr. Brady has spent the last year and a half campaigning. I’m no mathemetician, but If I remember right, JBT has only been in this race for about six months - a third of the time Brady has been campaigning. I think JBT is in cahoots with Oberweis to sabotage the Brady Campaign!

Makes as much sense as the other theory!

C’mon! This has gone beyond pathetic. Is Oberweis going to threaten in the next couple to run again if we don’t nominate him this time. He makes it embarrassing to be a Republican, regardless of who you support in this primary.

  38. - Anon - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 9:42 pm:

Like others, I’m dismayed by the constant infighting within the state Republican Party. However, I don’t see Bill Brady as the future of the party. He is anti-science, pro-gun, and opposes abortion in the case of rape and incest. That message may resonate with staunch conservatives, but it won’t win many statewide elections. Frankly, I don’t see much difference between Brady, Oberweis and Keys for that matter. As a moderate, they do not speak to my values and I don’t think they are going to bring many mainstream voters back to the party. I’m tiring of the culture wars and will not vote for politicans who seek to divide instead of reaching out with fresh ideas.

  41. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 10:08 pm:

If Brady wins, will he be running the same spots in Chicagoland he is running in Springpatch? You know the ones where he states, he is pro-life, loves the gun lobby and “is from Central Illinois”. Bet that plays well up there. Brady is better where he is because most of the state is no where near as conservative as him. I think he is dulusional if thinks he win statewide touting those positions. But keep dreaming GOP, he may be the best you are going to get for all time.

  42. - Not Tellin - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 10:08 pm:

Bi-Polarweis â„¢. Wumpus, that one does deserve a trademark (My check’s in the mail for using it). BTW, in ‘ole Jack’s defense, he is quite successful in killing every referendum the Carpentersville school district puts up. Too bad he chose the MilkMan. Since Zahm’s also working for Churchill in the 8th, these guys really know how to pick a winner.

  43. - FrustratedRepublican - Thursday, Mar 16, 06 @ 10:19 pm:

Had Jim Ryan not suffered such an unfortunate last name, he’d probably be governor right now, and he was about as conservative as Brady. I guess if you say it enough it must be true… a conservative can’t win in Illinois. Because Jim Edgar won and a conservative hasn’t won since I think says more about the weakness of the party than the ideology of the state. Blago will be beaten because he’s corrupt and has dug the state even deeper into debt than we already were - not because he’s liberal.

Edgar won re-election because he effectively painted Netsch as a tax-raiser - not because she was one on end or the other ideologically.

Sure they’ll try to paint a conservative with a broad brush, but who wields the brush may mean more than what they want to paint.

My recent lack of comments is attributed to concurring with 95% of other bloggers… and this be no different. I must also weigh-in on this. Oberweis has a record of having wierd people work for him. Jack Roeser and the Family Taxpayers Network are no different from any other (wierd) Obee supporters. They fail to see why people think they are wierd. Maybe someday they will try to look at things from another’s perspective… but I doubt it. The winner in their tirade is Brady. He comes out of this looking like a sane conservative. That will help position him in 2008 no matter what.

Just got Oberweis’s latest mailing. We all know how “anti-immigration” and pro-

Well, look at Obie’s picture in his latest brochure, the one with him and his grandkids sitting on the family room sofa.

Clear in the picture is a coffee-table book entitled “The Canadian Rockies”. The picture on the wall is by the French impressionist Caillebotte. Doesn’t so all-American to me…Obie flips yet again!

  57. - Randall Sherman - Friday, Mar 17, 06 @ 9:22 am:

The Illinois Committee for Honest Government did give serious consideration to endorsing Senator Brady’s candidacy for Governor in the Republican Primary, prior to our decision to endorse Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka. For the record, what swung the matter to Topinka was not the ideological issues, as the ICHG tries its best not to base endorsements on a strict ideological line like the IVI-IPO on the left or groups like the Family Taxpayers Network on the right. Rather,it was our contention that she has the best chance of any of the Republican hopefuls to destroy the political career of Rod Blagojevich, whom we consider to be a political cancer affecting both the people of the state of Illinois and the Illinois Democratic Party. In addition, Topinka’s more extensive record of service in state government had to be taken into account.

With all that said, while I may disagree with Bill Brady on a number of issues, he has consistantly campaigned in a dignified manner. The same cannot be said for Jim Oberweis. Should Brady seek re-election to the Illinois Senate in 2008, I suspect that the Illinois Committee for Honest Government (as part of our goal to have the General Assembly be composed of a diverse group of talented and capable individuals, given that no one side has a monopoly on good ideas) would quickly endorse him against some ideologue put up by the Family Taxpayers Network (or some similar group).

I only wish that more candidates would go about the campaign trail like Sen. Brady has, presenting their views on the issues and allowing him to agree or disagree with them.

  58. - Truthful James - Friday, Mar 17, 06 @ 10:21 am:

Randall has it right. Politics is amoral and relative by nature. Electoral victory results from weaving together coalitions — Cook County excepted

Never dig a chasm wider than you can bridge. One can not reform a party from the top down. Reform comes from the people who vote, not from the money.

The Republican Party has turned into a colloquy of fiefdoms, proud and stubborn. It is absent committeemen at the precinct level and those that have been elected or selected appear to be talkers rather than listeners. Ameliorating differences for a common effort is beyond some

Township party officials are usually dual hatted and pay more attention to their own political futures than the organization and efforts of the party base.

At the County level a similar attitude is in place

These faults are correctable. The State Party is similarly disconnected. Silence reigns The Buddha in Chicago state headquarters is silent. The Eunuch in Charleston sits on his political hoard and emerges occasionally to pontificate. The peniultimate Republican Governor is now engaged in fee generation crossing party lines. There is no urgency at the top. There is no urgency at the bottom. The special intersts groups fill in the vacuum.

Ya see..this is the kinda crap republicans have to deal with in Illinois. If I’m Bill Brady in the next election I say to this group….”Bring it on.”

  60. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Mar 17, 06 @ 10:46 am:

I don’t take FTN’s threats seriously, but I think their assertion that Brady is only in this race to split the conservative vote is right on the money.

-Brady’s smart, but his far-right message dooms him from ever winning the general.

-Brady’s pledge to run a positive race only applies to Topinka. He directly and indirectly attacks Oberweis at every opportunity.

It also appears that liberal GOP money is being funneled into Brady’s campaign to fund attacks against Oberweis. James Perry, Jr. of Chicago just wrote Brady a check for $10,000. He gave Brady a check for $5,000 in December.

In the past, he’s given Corinne Wood over $35,000 and supported George Ryan, Larry McKeon, and Chicago Alderman Vi Daley. If that doesn’t make you wonder who’s really behind Brady’s candidacy, nothing will.

  61. - Somewhat Confused - Friday, Mar 17, 06 @ 12:00 pm:

I agree, Brady has been a class act generally, but I expected that. I think he has the potential of an outstanding political future in Illinois. My great concern is that some of the really right wing positions he has spoken out on will come back to haunt him in future general elections, when he will be trying to talk about business climate, taxes, leadership, etc.

“BRADY ASKS BLAGOJEVICH, TOPINKA TO STOP POLITICIZING, HIDING BEHIND ELECTION STUNTS

Sen. Bill Brady, Republican candidate for Governor, today reacted to the latest election stunts from Rod Blagojevich and Judy Baar Topinka. Blagojevich this morning said he was launching his election campaign and Topinka announced an ethics reform proposal that ignores the root of corruption problems plaguing state government.

“…Both Rod Blagojevich and Judy Baar Topinka want to hide behind blame shifting and political rhetoric while avoiding public debates which would allow the people of Illinois to really see what they stand for and would bring to the table.”

I’m sorry but that seems to be somewhat of an attack to me. The rest of the article is here: http://www.bradyforgovernor2006.com/news/

You’ll have to click on the February 2006 Archives. The date of the article is February 19.

While it’s not the glaring, silly accusations put on by Looserweis and Co, it is what some would call an attack.

Macdougal (former IL Rep Chair) endorses Oberweis!!

  65. - Wumpus - Friday, Mar 17, 06 @ 6:50 pm:

Well MacDougal was ousted by the JBT folks/Kjellander if i recall right. Bi-Polarweis9Tm) has been the most outspoken critic of Bob K.

I may understand the “thinking” of Ftn, clean up your own house before you clean up oters’. The problem with that is that there is always room for some level of disagreement with rational people. Those folks are the all or none type.

Central stater, Yeah Brady one mean hombre pointing out a gimmick Topinka’s using. That’s a whole lot like obie lying and saying Brady voted for a tax increase that had not happened yet. because Obie and his political staff aren’t smart enough to run an election let alone the State.

    YDD:

It appears there are at least three different “James Perry” contributors listed on the Board of Elections website, but why should facts like that stand in the way of an opportunity for you to bash Brady? Oberweis supporter or not, your tactics appear to be pretty much the same.

In truth it is Jack Roeser splitting the conservative vote. Ask Roeser to explain why he backed the liberal Jesse White for Secretary of State? He’s full of hot air, nothing more. He’s a CINO (conservative in name only). Oh Jack, why don’t you pay your fines to the board of election. If you don’t that isn’t very fiscally conservative of you.

    ay, ay, ay …

so one day obe’s people claim brady is “too extreme” in his conservatism. the next day they claim he is “too liberal” … so which is it?

i’ll give you that brady has some strong, conservative personal convictions and opinions. he doesn’t shy away from those. but i also believe he has shown an ability and willingness to work with people who don’t share all the same views - that’s what we need in a leader.

it’s obe who has changed his personal convictions in the past few years … if anyone has an identity crisis, it’s jim. but please don’t project that identity crisis on others.

i don’t agree with all of bill’s positions, but i support him in his run for governor. and if anyone is splitting the cons. vote or keeping anyone from being elected, it’s the stagnant and spoiled milkman up in sugar grove.

regarding brady’s “attacks” … really? i think there is a difference between smear-campaigns/mudslinging and calling out an opponent on an issue or their view … fake headlines and distorted truths are attacks … character assassination is an attack … calling on opponents to do things the right way? hmm … not an attack in my book.

I’ve known BB for over 15 years. It is well known locally that he has always wanted to be Da Gov. It’s also well known by those who know him better, that he can barely decide to take a dump without checking with his inner circle first.(Inner circle being brothers, mom, and a few friends since childhood). Billy isn’t in it for “the people”, or anything so noble, he is in it for Billy (just like most politicians). Billy has never stood by his convictions unless it is what will get him the most votes. Populism as it’s finest.
