In which I finally get to meet Tim Nieukirk…

Monday, Nov 6, 2006

I threw a party for a few pals in Chicago Saturday night. My usual pre-election thing. The highlight of the evening was a special appearance by write-in candidate Tim Nieukirk, his running mate Casey DeFauw and campaign manager Ryan Rudd.

These guys have got it going on. It didn’t take long to figure out that the stir they’ve created was no accident. A lot of planning and a whole lot of work went into their YouTube candidacy.

My favorite line of the evening was from DeFauw: “And that’s when I called Tim and said ‘Dude, we’re gonna nuke the Hamburglar.’”

The man himself, Tim Nieukirk…

Running mate Casey DeFauw, who directed all the spots…

Campaign manager Ryan Rudd…

Group hug…

See all of Nieukirk’s “campaign ads” here. His MySpace page is here.

They haven’t sold much Get Nieuked gear at their Cafe Press site, and since they’ve financed their entire “campaign” out of their own pockets it would be a good thing if you could go to their site and help them out. If they’ve made you laugh out loud during a miserably negative year when there wasn’t much to laugh about, the least you could do is buy a button or something.

Thanks for encouraging purchases to help offset his costs, I just ordered my Tshirt. His campaign has been terrific.

  2. - sad - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:01 am:

Bought a couple of buttons. I’m glad you all had a great time partying in Chicago. Funny and thought provoking commercials.

  3. - The 'Broken Heart' of Rogers Park - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:03 am:

Please tell me you’re not sharing the same cigar?

  4. - Frank Booth - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:11 am:

    Predictions:
two years from now, Friends of MJ Madigan have purchased $1.2 million worth of Nieukirk buttons and Keith Sommer’s in for one helluva re-election bid against the Nieukster (D-Washington) in the 106th state House district.

  5. - Reddbyrd - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:16 am:

I thought these guys had it together. Then you reveal they are suits…..who the hell wears a tie on Saturday nite in Chicago?
    A.The stiffs at the symphony
    B.Bulls’ Broadcasters
    C.The “Get Nuked” Team

Disgraceful unless they sold their jeans to buy the cigars. Everyone no one has ever been to Bernardi’s in a suit. :)

Hopefully they get a big movie deal and then run in ‘08 for Prez.

  6. - Jacques Strappe - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:30 am:

Who’s that really scary-looking guy in the middle? ;-)

  7. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:35 am:

    Hey now.

Also, fyi, I just bought a t-shirt and a button.

  8. - Fellow Washingtonian - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:36 am:

I have laughed until my sides hurt watching Tim and Casey’s ads.

Didn’t know Tim was from Washington, IL - my hometown.

    Nieuk just got a write-in.

    Go Panthers!!

  9. - Wumpus - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:40 am:

Perhaps Tim could be fashion adviser for Phil Hare.

  10. - Marie - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:50 am:

OMG! Tim could be Richey Daley’s twin brother in that first shot!

  11. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 12:07 pm:

was this party at the Union League Club of Chicago?

  12. - dc - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 12:20 pm:

Miller, that last pic looks like you guys are on your way to getting “Nieuked.” Barkeep, another round of Jameson….

  13. - Bridget Dooley - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 12:42 pm:

So where’s the victory party going to take place? I’d ditch out on all my commitments for that one.

  14. - The 'Broken Heart' of Rogers Park - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 12:55 pm:

A victory would be one percent.

  15. - Jaded - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 1:59 pm:

They spelled candidate (canidate) wrong twice on the Cafepress website. Is it on purpose (some joke that I missed) or do they just not know how to spell candidate?

I’m buying something from them, I am just not sure what yet.

  16. - Name/Nickname/Anon - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 2:50 pm:

Their Lt. Gov candidate is by far cuter than Quinn or Birkett. If I hadn’t already voted I would go with these guys. Darn that Early Voting thing!

  17. - Michelle Flaherty - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 3:35 pm:

Wow! That musta been some party Rich. Let’s see, there’s you and Tim and Casey and Rudd and maybe one other guy in a blue shirt.
    Not exactly ladies night.
I haven’t seen such a rockin’ party since the 1998 John Schmidt for Governor victory celebration at the Midland Hotel.

  18. - heet101 - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 4:28 pm:

With all of the excellent ads run by the Get Nuked team, I’m surprised that the Governor hasn’t responded with a flurry of negative ads.

  19. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 4:49 pm:

Michelle, there were women at the party as well. lol

  20. - Whizbang - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 6:06 pm:

Buy something? Are you kidding just buy something? I bought something and am voting for them.

  21. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 6:10 pm:

I’m buying Bill a little goodwill gift here. Can’t spoil the surprise.

  22. - Rich Miller - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 7:49 pm:

Ravenswood, you’ve got a good eye.

  23. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Tuesday, Nov 7, 06 @ 7:51 am:

Rich, I’m a memeber, I can recognize that plasma tv and stale cigar smoke anywhere on the web!

  24. - Truthful James - Tuesday, Nov 7, 06 @ 9:50 am:

Just bought two hats, no hiding behind shirts, ties, and coats.

These guys have fertile minds, perhaps some commercial agency might pick them up. They would never work in MainStream Politics at this point, Not enough hatred and bad mouthing.

The last spot said it all.

  25. - Boss Lady - Tuesday, Nov 7, 06 @ 4:43 pm:

If you can run the State of Il like you run my kitchen- Springfield- Here he comes! You are all about to be NIEUKED!

  26. - Chef Shawn - Tuesday, Nov 7, 06 @ 4:45 pm:

You can barely run the fry station at work- how the hell do expect to govern the State?

  27. - "Ranch" Lady - Tuesday, Nov 7, 06 @ 4:48 pm:

If you can’t tread water here in IL, come join me in New York and we will give Hillary a run for her money!
