Ground him?

Wednesday, Jun 27, 2007

* Rep. Bill Mitchell has found an almost perfect press release vehicle

Like Dad taking the car keys away from a troublesome teenager, a lawmaker wants to ground Gov. Rod Blagojevich for not finishing the state budget.

Rep. Bill Mitchell is proposing banning the governor and legislative leaders from flying on state aircraft if they if they haven’t agreed on a budget by the May 31 deadline — as happened last month.

* This is a very big state, so I don’t agree with the particular legislation in question. The governor ought to be able to get around quickly. But Mitchell’s timing was solid and it seemed to strike a nerve at Blagojevich HQ…

The governor’s office has refused to respond to questions about the matter. But spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff said in an e-mail Tuesday, “Rep. Mitchell should focus his energy on doing something constructive to move the budget forward instead of on state officials’ transportation.”

* Speaking of “Air Rod,” I’ve been thinking about putting this cartoon on a t-shirt as part of our charity project. Perhaps you can come up with a suitable caption in comments today…

He must have taken advantage of the special summer OT flight package — $5800 RT Chicago to Springfield and a bag-full of hair products.”

  7. - Bluefish - Wednesday, Jun 27, 07 @ 9:58 am:

Flying to Springfield at taxpayers expense: $5,800

Cost to taxpayers of each day of overtime session: $50,000

Seeing the expressions on the faces of the suckers/taxpayers who voted to reelect Governor you as you fly overhead: Priceless

Milo can’t be subpoenaed at 15,000 feet. Milo’s planning on spending as much time as he can in the air. He’s hoping Fitz and Lisa forget about him.
Still like the Virgin Galactic idea. $200,000 per pop. No problem for Milo, it’s not his money.

“The governor ought to be able to get around quickly.”

Agreed, but it seems to me that the walk from the Governor’s mansion to the State Capitol is much quicker than the round trip flight from Ravenswood Manor to Springfield.

“Realizing Blago’s embarrassing inability to move beyond his talking points in the budget negotiations, the Governor’s staff decided it best if Rod just take his cue cards and fly around the state for a while to just tell the voters, once again, about how brilliant his budget is.”
