Good looking candidates? Plus: Halvorson complains; Roskam ties himself closer to Obama; Kirk’s new TV ad; Etc.

* No offense intended, but I’m not sure that this new study applies to a huge number of Illinois races…

Seventy-three people — 35 men and 38 women — were asked to rate pictures of male and female congressional candidates on a seven-point scale for how competent, attractive, approachable and dominant they seemed to be. Then they were asked if they would vote for the candidates for president.

Both the male and female voters were more likely to say they would vote for women whom they considered attractive. The male candidates? Attractiveness was not an issue for either male or female voters.

Studies have shown that women with thin eyebrows, round faces and small chins are generally considered most attractive. Men considered good-looking tend to have thick eyebrows, square faces and large chins

* Despite outspending her Republican opponent on every level, Democratic congressional hopeful Debbie Halvorson is now complaining that Marty Ozinga is spending more money on himself. From a press release

Yesterday, Marty Ozinga contributed another $100,000 to his campaign, bringing his total to $570,000 for the cycle to date (i ii iii). This is in direct opposition to his numerous declarations to the public that he would not self-fund his campaign. Legally, nothing prohibits Marty Ozinga from contributing to his own campaign, however, he has now violated the public’s trust on numerous occasions, telling the public one thing on one hand, and doing something completely different on another. […]

“I won’t be writing big checks for my own campaign, I just don’t believe in it” [Ozinga told the Tribune].

She has a point, but things change when you’re losing a race and it seems like the whole world is financing your opponent.

* In other congressional news, Republican Peter Roskam has a new mailer touting his ties to Barack Obama…

That’s the same family and the same quote featured on Roskam’s “I’m with that Obama guy” website.

You can find more Roskam mail and some harsh partisan diatribes at this link.

No offense intended, but was there a reason you put Halvorson-Ozinga right under the story about “attractive” candidates?

  2. - phocion - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:05 am:

Sarah Palin is gorgeous, but plenty of women despise her. I think that study is missing something.

  3. - Rich Miller - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:05 am:

    LOL

    No.

  4. - wordslinger - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:24 am:

I thought the Halvorson campaign missed a trick in their use of Ozinga images. For the most part, they’ve been full color and he’s smiling. To me, he looks like somebody’s jolly grandpa or uncle.

Ozinga, on the other hand, dug up some less-than-flattering shots of Halvorson that they put in standard negative ad grainy black and white.

===No offense intended,….=== Rich, ,how do you put a post out like this one without even giving us your standard warning about being appropriate. I have already self-censored 3 of my own responses.
You do have to give Dawn a lot of credit for being such a good sport.

  6. - Vote Quimby! - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:27 am:

What if Marty doesn’t consider $100,000 a ‘big check’? Caught up in the semantics.

When I was in Minnesota, to volunteer for the Republican National Convention, a friend of mine called me and asked me to find buy, for him, the button that says, “The hottest vice president from the coldest state.” I looked for it, but I didn’t find it.

  8. - wordslinger - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:43 am:

Phil, who are you talking about, Hubert Humphrey or Walter Mondale?

  9. - VanillaMan - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:51 am:

So are you referring that Halvorson’s edge in this race is due to her bushy eyebrows, square face and large chin?

  10. - Rich Miller - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:53 am:

    Easy, now.

  11. - Deeda - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 11:57 am:

Why would anyone want to brag that they have ties to Obama?

Rich Miller wrote, “She has a point, but things change when you’re losing a race and it seems like the whole world is financing your opponent.”

ONE of your opponents. Let’s not forget that Jason Wallace is also an established party candidate running against Halvorson and Ozinga; and on this particular issue, he has the high ground over BOTH of his opponents, as not only had he voluntarily limited his campaign spending to 10,000 but also refuses all corporate money.

  13. - Rich Miller - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 12:01 pm:

===Why would anyone want to brag that they have ties to Obama? ===

    Um, fear of losing?

  14. - Squideshi - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 12:04 pm:

Brian Stanley wrote, “‘At this point (in the campaign) I think Marty Ozinga (Republican), Jason Wallace (Green Party) and I are familiar enough, we could do each other’s introductions,’ Democrat Debbie Halvorson told the crowd of about 200 at the University of St. Francis Recreation Center.

One of the interesting things about this race for the Green Party is that Jason Wallace is not being ignored. He’s actually being included in the candidate forums, actually being mentioned in the reports, and even his Democratic and Republican opponents are mentioning him by name (They usually just ignore that the Green candidate even exists.) I have to give kudos to both Halvorson and Ozinga for being democratic enough to recognize Jason Wallace as a real opponent. I think it’s too bad that he’s only NOW breaking into the double digits in poll results.

  15. - Deleted Daily - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 3:53 pm:

Plenty of women despise Sarah Palin because she is gorgeous. These same women love Hillary Clinton.

  16. - GOP'er - Friday, Oct 31, 08 @ 4:43 pm:

    Peter Roskam, what a sell-out.

So let me see if I have this straight. Peter Roskam will attack and smear any Democrat who runs against him, even two very honorable women who served our country in the military - including the one two years ago who left both of her legs in Iraq.

BUT he can’t kiss up enough to Barack Obama, a guy who will lurch this country Left like no one has before.

Roskam is really making me sick to my stomach. I wouldn’t vote for the guy.

Seriously, if it’s true that his opponent Morganthaler really does have an R voting record, I would rather take my chances with that military vet. And who knows, maybe she could be pursuaded to run as an R next time, one who won’t have to attack our veterans to win.

If Obama had served in the military, maybe Roskam would help McCain-Palin by taking on Obama then. Who knows anymore.

Sorry, I’m just sick and tired of these feckless Illinois Republicans.
