Durbin goes full circle

* Dick Durbin is now trying to make nice. Roland Burris will be sworn in to the US Senate tomorrow and our senior Senator is throwing a party

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the assistant majority leader who initially blocked the appointment, will hold a reception in Burris’ honor.

Vice President Dick Cheney will swear Burris in. Cheney is probably the only US politician who might be more unpopular than Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Emphasis on “might.”

    No matter what is thought about how he got the seat the fact that he will be sworn in as only the fourth black senator since reconstruction on Dr. Martin Luther King’s 80th Birthday is a nice touch.

    I cannot believe how many people/organizations are falling all over themselves “congratulating” Burris. The Chicago City Council passed a resolution yesterday in honor of Burris.

    Yes, he had to be seated, but I don’t think everyone should be such hypocrites about the appointment. Let him take the seat, without all the hoopla.

    I don’t think Durbin ever had any personal animosity toward Burris, so throwing a party for him doesn’t seem hypocritical to me. I think Durbin has been all wet when it came to the political posturing, though. As was Harry Reid.

    Well Burris has 13 months to the democratic primary in 2010. I’ll be voting ABR…….anyone BUT Roland. If Reid,Durbin and ultimately Obama can’t stand up to Blago and Burris how the hell are they going to deal with real evil like Putin or Mitch McConnell?

    Oh well. I’ve put together well over 100 Blago and Burris toons from around “the google”.
    See them here and laugh or get angry depending on your mood.

    I prefer anger………that way I’ll die sooner and won’t collect as much Social Security.

    It is a nice touch coming from Sen. Durbin. Durbin has never been afraid to admit when he has made a mistake. He should have embraced the Burris appointment all along and now he has. All’s well that ends well. Congratulations, SENATOR Burris!

    Obviously, to me anyway, I would have been the best choice but if I couldn’t have it I’m glad it went to the old pro, Roland. You can tell he is really enjoying it. He can’t stop smiling. I can enjoy it vicariously through him.
    I just hope that he wore the Groucho Marx nose and glasses when he was visiting the camapign office.

    It has been a bad couple months for Senator Durbin with the Gov. Ryan get out of jail situation and now Burris.
    Both center around Governor Blagojvech, the gift that keeps on giving that’s Blago.

    I think it’s safe to say that Senator Burris will be around for a long time…Jan Schakowsky and other Senate hopefuls will have to play the waiting game one more time.

    if you define Burris being around a long time as until January 2011 then you are correct. Someone will likely run and defeat him in the Dem primary. Assuming he doesn’t face more than two serious opponents. Now if by some act of God he does win the Democratic Primary, then very possibly he will face his first defeat at the hand of a Republican in November 2010.

    That all assumes the GOP is smart enough not to nominate some nutjob ala “The Milk Man” or Alan Keyes.

    It isn’t surprising that the Senior Senator of the state is having a party to welcome his colleague to the Senate. In fact it would be considered odd in the Senate if he didn’t have such a reception. They are going to be working together for the next few years and it is important to start out in a friendly manner.

    I had to chuckle when Durbin quickly jumped on board the “Love Train” with the other United States Senators after Barack Obama spoke glowingly of Rollie Burris. Durbin showed that he is nobody’s fool. He wants to still stay in Washington after his term in office comes up. He must have the support of Obama and the African-American voters in Illinois to be a survivor. Durbin has just shown us that he plans to be “a survivor”. Idealism has no place in politics when it comes to being re-elected if you are an Illinois politician.
