Question of the day

Thursday, Oct 1, 2009

* This video of 32nd House District candidate Syron Smith got me to thinking…

* The Question: Are there any legislative or local candidates in your area who are using any “new media” - YouTube, blogging, etc.? If so, what are they doing?

I’m using (as time allows) Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and getting into blogging now for my State Rep. campaign, 37th District. Videos on YouTube coming soon when appropriate (speechs, campaign events, etc.).

This guy is running for judge in our area. IMHO his YouTube spot is just, well, you be the “judge”. …and what’s that he’s wearing around his neck?

Many of these tools like twitter, facebook, etc. have become as common as the campaign website. During the special election for Rahm’s seat, Quigley was sending out tweets every other minute about people whom had just voted for him. I don’t know how effective that was, but it was really annoying.

i think one of the more activve ones seems to be schillerstrom…i get texts, regular tweets, have seen some internet ads for him in the past on drudge. he also has about the best site among the gubernatorial candidates.

  7. - Okay Then... - Thursday, Oct 1, 09 @ 1:52 pm:

A lot of the political novices seem to be relying pretty heavily on Facebook. In some instances it is overkill.

My alderman has a twitter account, but I rarely pay attention to it. My state rep is on Twitter and from what I’ve seen she might talk about what’s going on in Springfield.

  9. - dixie chick - Thursday, Oct 1, 09 @ 2:32 pm:

schillerstrom has used new media pretty well and I have to admit I learned alot more about him becasue of it - but the differnce I notce is that he also responds to issues etc- and his videos are witty - maybe he is the “Most Interesting Leader in Illinois?”

  10. - old pol Mike - Thursday, Oct 1, 09 @ 2:43 pm:

Facebook for casual, frequent events (canvassing, etc.). Evite for larger campaign events. Since evite (and others like it) are rolled out via email, invites can be more targeted/controlled then blasting an fb group.
