Blagojevich wants trial delayed

Thursday, Mar 11, 2010

* Illinois Democrats haven’t gotten a break in a long while, but one might be coming from an unlikely source

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich has repeatedly said he’s looking forward to clearing his name at his trial.

But now he wants that trial to start five months later than scheduled. Lawyers for the indicted governor made a formal request to continue the June trial to November.

They say they need a delay because they don’t know what the charges they’ll face at trial.

That could mean a post-election trial, which would be fine with the Democrats. The only problem would be all those pre-trial motions, which could still be used for political payback. Just imagine.

Blagojevich’s motion can be viewed by clicking here.

Gee Rich I posted the same thing a week ago as a comment and you deleted it.

    lol

    Don’t do it again, either.

  3. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 3:30 pm:

While the ratings of “The Apprentice” aren’t stellar, having Rod Blagojevich on television with the rest of the cast, is going to still make news here in Illinois.

Every criticism made during the show, everytime Blagojevich makes some kind of comment, each time his face appears on television - Illinoisans are going to get emotional. The fact that this jerk is becoming some kind of television personality is going to anger us regardless of how well he does in the show.

Democrats are going to have to hope Rod Blagojevich gets fire ASAP or their misery will continue.

The trial will suck enough. Giving him more celebrity cred will give him more attention after “The Apprentice”. His trial delay request seems to be based on his newfound love of entertainment, or can be spun that way by critics.

Illinois Democrats: “What were they thinking?”

  4. - wordslinger - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 3:51 pm:

Blago’s been on a pretty good narcissistic bender the last year or so. Maybe he’s sobering up and realizing that the longer til trial, the longer on the outside.

Although, it didn’t stop him from taking Letterman’s money to humiliate himself last night.

  5. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 3:52 pm:

So Fred Thompson has sympathy for Blagojevich? What a crock of bs. He hates Patrick Fitzgerald and finds common ground with our former governor because of that simple fact. The enemy of my enemy and whatnot.

Rod want his trial delayed? I want to be taller. We don’t always get what we want. And this request for a delay from the guy who can’t wait to prove his innocence? He’s milking this notoreity for every penny he can earn before going to federal prison. That’s what the delay is about, to get him another paying gig or two before he gets fitted for his orange jumpsuit.

  6. - Stones - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 4:02 pm:

I could be wrong but wouldn’t it be preferrable to the Democrats to get this trial overwith ASAP rather than all the press buildup just prior to an election, particularly if there is a decent chance he might beat the rap?

  7. - Segatari - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 4:03 pm:

    >lol - Don’t do it again, either.

Do what? Repeat what was said on a national talk show?

  8. - dupage dan - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 4:06 pm:

I frankly don’t care if RB has an impact on the election at this point. He is an embarassment for Illinois and the longer he is around the more pain we all have to endure. Please, Rod, go away. And take your hair with you. Please, judge, do not delay the trial.

  9. - True Observer - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 4:11 pm:

“Politico reports: Rep. Joe “Sestak has said that the administration offered him a high-ranking government job if he’d stay out of the race. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has been asked repeatedly about the accusation in recent weeks but so far has neither confirmed nor denied that a job was offered. But in a letter to White House general counsel Robert Bauer Wednesday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said that, if Sestak’s allegation is true, administration officials may have violated a federal statute which makes it a crime for a government employee to use his authority ‘for the purpose of interfering with, or affecting, the nomination or the election of any candidate’ for certain offices, including Senate seats.”

How is this any different than what Blago was doing?

  10. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 4:17 pm:

Yes TO, it is exactly the same situation. I’m sure the FBI has Obama on tape auctioning off federal appointments to the highest bidder.

Memo to Rep. Issa: are you sure you want to open this door? Will you live with the consequences? Are you prepared for Republican officials to be rolled up in this witch hunt too, or just Democrats?

TO, that might be the dumbest thing I’ve seen posted here in a long time (and I’ve seen a lot of dumb things posted here — including some of my own).

  11. - hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 5:06 pm:

So Issa wants the Hatch Act applied to politicians? Hope he’s never endorsed another Republican or donated any money to another politician while a government employee working for the U.S. House of Representatives then.

  12. - fed up - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 5:32 pm:

Well Blago was Quinns running mate for 6 years and is a self proclaimed expert on testicular veracity.

  13. - really? - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 5:48 pm:

Why does all this just make me sad? All the discussion about former Rep Massa has kept this off the national news. Or maybe this is no longer news?

  14. - Brennan - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 6:14 pm:

New standards in ethics. Offering an Executive branch gig to leave a political primary is the same thing as an endorsement.

Thank God for Illinois. It sets the standards so low that everyone can pass.

Boston Blackie’s spells more trouble for Alexi. trib running with it on web page one. more loans to suspect people, this time ones who contributed to him. bad. very bad.

  17. - Park - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 6:49 pm:

Despite the fact that the Motion is so poorly written (”counsels”?), Blago’s got a 50/50 chance of getting it. The Court will have to balance the Fed’s desire for a speedy resolution against Blago’s need to prepare a defense against violations that may be declared unconstitutional. Bad timing, that.

Don’t see the magic of delaying it till November 10, however. How ’bout begining of September. It would be fun to see Quinn campaigning while being quetioned every day on new stuff from the trial (not so fun if you’re a D). I wonder if Washington DOJ will intervene and direct Fitz to agree to the November 10 date. That would certainly be making the best of a bad situation for the D candidates.

  18. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 7:14 pm:

Gotta love Illinois! Always have to have a Plan B, C, D….

  19. - wordslinger - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 7:52 pm:

    – I wonder if Washington DOJ will intervene and direct Fitz to agree to the November 10 date.–

Let’s see: Will the Obama Justice Department try to muscle Fitz on the Blago trial date for the alleged benefit of Alexi and Pat Quinn?

Try a 10-second risk/reward analysis on that brainteaser.

Some how, some way, I don’t see it happening.

Hope Judge Zagel doesn’t fall for this.
This is a sure sign Blagojevich’s getting nervous. Plus this is more time for Blagojevich to cover up and make deals.
And if this doesn’t work, he’s going to start naming names.
Wonder if Eric Holder is going to start moving the chess pieces around? ? ?

  22. - Weasel Factor - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 8:21 pm:

Good people keep losing their jobs, homes, families are getting torn apart by the economic conditions.
And Blagojevich(s) just keep rolling along.

  23. - "Stupid is as stupid does" - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 8:26 pm:

If Judge Zagel bites on this: They say they need a delay because they don’t know what the charges they’ll face at trial.
Must not be very good attorneys or now they know their client is guilty.

  24. - Cecil - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 9:51 pm:

Can someone please switch Blago’s shampoo with Nair Hair Remover so he will go away until his trial? Anybody?

  25. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 11, 10 @ 9:54 pm:

This is all Zorn’s fault. Seems he started this “trend”. Just sayin’. lol

  26. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Mar 12, 10 @ 2:29 am:

“Well Blago was Quinns running mate for 6 years and is a self proclaimed expert on testicular veracity.”

I thought it was testicular virility. Testicular veracity still doesn’t make sense, but too much sense for Blago.
