*** UPDATED x1 *** Raw videos of Madigan, Quinn and Cullerton

Wednesday, Mar 17, 2010

* He didn’t really say a lot, but it’s rare to post video of a full speech by House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Madigan spoke to the IBEW this morning. He talked about the budget, the upcoming campaign and Sen. Bill Brady, among other things. Have a look

* Gov. Quinn was also at the event, and answered questions from the press afterwards. He talked about several topics, including Sen. Brady’s refusal to detail his own budget plans. Have a gander

*** UPDATE *** Sheesh. I must’ve zoned out when he said this

Quinn backed off of his previous suggestion that lawmakers skip their upcoming break and stay in Springfield to work on his budget plan.

“I don’t think that’s going to be necessary,” Quinn told Daily Herald reporter Tim Magaw and others covering the meeting.

[ *** End of Update *** ]

* Quinn’s speech to the union was peppered with slams on Sen. Brady and the Illinois Policy Institute’s budget proposal.

The governor noted that Brady wanted to abolish the minimum wage, opposed unions, and then predicted a “rough, hard tough battle” against him.

Quinn vowed a fight…

“I’m not a shrinking violet. I’ve been around awhile. I’ve been knocked down, just like folks I’m sure in your union have been knocked down. But I always get up. And that’s what we have to do in Illinois. We have to get up and fight.”

The governor also spoke about AT&T’s plan to rewrite the Telecommunications Act. He pledged to make sure that the IBEW was at the bargaining table and claimed that AT&T had made promises in the past that didn’t turn out to be true. Here’s Part One

Part two, which is pretty short, is here.

* Senate President John Cullerton also spoke to the union and answered a couple of questions from reporters. He talked about the governor’s suggestion that the General Assembly stick around through spring break if necessary to vote on his tax hike. He also talked briefly about the lt. governor situation. Watch

* More raw videos from the IBEW meeting…

* Senate President Cullerton’s full speech.

* Rep. John Bradley’s speech.

Wow, what a stemwinder from Madigan. I felt a chill running up my leg. The guy knows how to give a speech, that’s for sure. Can’t believe he got through the whole thing with being interrupted with applause.

Seriously, he’s been giving the same speech to smaller groups in his Capitol office for months now. He has it memorized. He doesn’t say much of anything in terms of solutions, but he has an excellent grasp of the obvious. The only thing he left out was “nonparticipating dropouts.” Maybe next time he’ll use a teleprompter so he won’t forget the money line.

    Yeah, it’s a bit dry.

Sen. Dan Bradley is so lame.

  4. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 10:24 am:

Sen. Dan Bradley? Is he from Iowa or something, because there is no such guy here.

  5. - bdrlgion - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 10:29 am:

Wow. I’m surprised you chose the Larry King/Lisa Madigan image as your caption’s “Question of the Day,” considering how awesome the screenshot of Madigan is.

  6. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 10:30 am:

bdrlgion, I considered it. Briefly. But I figured I’d better not.

so new jersey is $11 billion in the red, and gov. christie gave his budget address yesterday, i gather his address was on time by jersey standards. he held firm on his campaign promise to not raise taxes. new jersey dems were appreciably unhappy yesterday. oh well–their side lost last november.

from what i saw/read of it, looks like christie’s budget address was pretty solid. i’ve stated before that new jerseyans (wd?) made an excellent pick in christie, and i hope illinoisans choose as well and wisely when our turn comes around later this year. i think christie is just what new jersey needs at this time. kinda reminds me of how new york city got it right when they went with guiliani—look at how much better new york city became because of him. he turned nyc around big time.

illinois is in need of a turnaround, or restructuring as the folks in the private sector like to say. i think a dem controlled GA needs to be balanced by a republican governor. i think this will be in illinois’ best interest overall.

===looks like christie’s budget address was pretty solid.===

Among other things, he proposed skipping the state’s $3 billion pension payment.

  10. - George - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 10:51 am:

    WCW -

So you support Christie’s plan to cut education, cut aid to local governments, skip pension payments, etc.?

Hmmm…. now where have I heard about those ideas before?

The best line from Madigan was at the end. It is time for me to step over. Like he really is going to do that.

    - details, details, details. ;)-

Yet another example of how you really don’t know what you’re talking about, you just hate Pat Quinn.

  21. - Loop Lady - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 1:36 pm:

Thank you Small Town Liberal for the whack job on WCW the wacky…anyone can despise a pol, but just try to govern yourself before passing judgement…Happy St. Paddy’s Day everyone! I’m off to celebrate!!

  22. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 2:00 pm:

I’m happy to hear my spring break vacation is back on! Thanks Patsy.

  23. - dupage dan - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 2:25 pm:

Yep, it’s easy to dump on WCW, especially when she makes a gaff. So, you win that point. Now what? Going w/the “mighty Quinn”? How’s the last year gone for ya? I know he can still blame stuff on RB (who PQ supported unconditionally as you remember) but that time is over now. In fact, PQ could try blaming this on Thompson, Stratton or Ogilvie but I doubt he could pull that off. Name something of substance that PQ has accomplished? Something he said he was going to do and then do it? Other than being a “really nice guy”, what recommends PQ for this post?

  24. - Pot calling kettle - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 2:31 pm:

==Other than being a “really nice guy”, what recommends PQ for this post?==

    He’s not Bill Brady. LOL

  25. - Small Town Liberal - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 2:59 pm:

Dupage - If I had made a comment gushing over how PQ was a perfect governor, I would answer your question. But, again, you’re bringing up an argument I didn’t make. All I did was point out that WCW makes completely unsubstantiated attacks on Quinn in 99% of her posts on here, and she had proven that once again. Argue with that if you want, quit bringing up things I did not say.

  26. - Interested Observer - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 3:06 pm:

I guess I hadn’t noticed this before, but if Speaker Madigan sat on his hands I don’t think he could talk.

  27. - FDR Democrat - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 3:11 pm:

Nice speech by John Bradley. Taking the populist
message right to the Tea Baggers!!

  28. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 5:05 pm:

–We have to save this video to show to archeologists how this species became extinct.–

Better yet, they can read your archived posts, which prove that Darwin was way wrong.

  29. - Will County Woman - Wednesday, Mar 17, 10 @ 6:42 pm:

The parallels between NJ & IL are amazing. I really like christie, he comes across as very honest and refreshing and w/o game playing; he practically could’ve been giving illinois’ budget address. wish he had.

Illinois Review has a thread/link about Gov. Christie’s budget address http://www.njn.net/news/coverage/2010/2010-03-16-christiebudgetmessage.html with a piece titled:

‘NJ Gov. Warns Illinois Against Tax Hike’

LOL…I just love the comments section on the NJN.net website under the video!!!!
