It is about as idiot-proof a boat as you can find. Part of the fun of Sunfish sailing is deliberately dunking the boat to cool off on a hot day. If Kirk lost the halyard, (the rope that controls raising the sail) , he could have just pulled the mast out of it’s hole and paddled or kicked the boat to shore, like it was a surfboard. What I get from the Kirk evolving story thing is that this is a guy that likes drama and has an inferiority complex. The plain truth is never enough for Kirk, everything has to be embellished a tad. However, we have been seeing politics played on this over the past decade. Remember Clinton’s book, My Life? Remember how fact checkers combed through it? There was a riptide, and I couldn’t get back to shore, and a German pilot jumped in the ocean and saved me. All of that is true. All of that is a good story. And if that’s the type of story Mark Kirk was putting forth, he’d be just fine. The problem is, he gives too many specifics (and yes, I know that’s counter-intuitive). He’s claiming to EXACTLY remember EVERYTHING that happened *35* years ago. It’s much better for him to admit he doesn’t quite recall, because it’s been so long, than to try and be certain about each detail. Especially now that he’s been ‘caught’ making up certain parts of his other life stories (military service, etc). One thing that frustrates me about our elected politicians, as a whole, is their complete inability to admit when they’re wrong. Another thing that frustrates me about our elected politicians, as a whole, is that they show no interest in learning about the world around them — or learning from their mistakes. Kirk made a mistake with the military stuff…and is repeating that mistake, time and time again. A simple unadorned answer to the reporter about the boating mishap would have resulted in none of the scrutiny of the story. As a retired teacher, I can remember young children taking a situation I also witnessed and making up quite a tale for others to hear. Most grow up and learn not to embellish the truth. He was in fact rescued by the Coast Guard. Now there are at least two additional sources of body temperature and lips being blue while in the hospital. We also now have differing definitions of hyperthermia from medical experts, including one which states “loss of awareness” which may explain the “sunset” statements. We now have a medical opinion which attacks the junk science used by the Tribune to try to attack Kirk’s story. Interesting how all the involved parties to this incident are rushing to Kirk’s defense. The same thing happened to the attacks on his military record, which is how the fervor of those attacks died down. I seem to recall when Senator Kerry was “swiftboated” some of the vets who with him were contesting his version of events.
