*** UPDATED x1 *** Quinn victory press conference live-blog and video

Friday, Nov 5, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* ABC7 will broadcast it live.

I’ll post the embedded video at 3:30, when the festivities are set to begin.

* 3:27 pm - The feed is now hot, so here’s the embed.

If you have any problems with ABC7’s feed, you can click here to watch WGN.

* 3:33 pm - WGN just reported that the presser is running 10-20 minutes late.

* While we’re waiting for the governor, House Republican Leader Tom Cross just issued a statement…

“Residents across the state and the nation have sent a very strong message this week by electing more Republicans to serve in six new seats in the Illinois House.

The next couple of months we will congratulate and talk to the new members in our caucus, as well as the members across the aisle. We will also work with the newly elected constitutional officers and ask for the input and ideas for comprehensive solutions.

It is imperative that we continue listen to Illinois residents’ concerns and ideas and work together on solutions as we look forward to getting our state back on track.

If we make that our mission, we will be able to enact solutions that will create more jobs and a more efficient, effective government that is accountable to the people we serve.”

* 3:58 pm - Almost a half hour late. Four more years, campers. Oy.

*** 3:59 pm *** And we’re starting…

“We may have strong differences on policy issues, but we’re all Americans and Illinoisans.”

Said being elected was a “tremendous privilege.”

“We were often underestimated, but not by me.” Said he believes in grassroots politics.

Education, he said, is the “key to opportunity for everyone.”

“My job is to put Illinois to work.” Mentioned education again and said he wants to maintain integrity in government. Said those were his three top goals.

He used Manny’s as a microcosm of Illinois. Diverse clientele where everybody seems to get along.

“I could tell last week that there was a surge everywhere I went.” “The people call the shots, not the experts, not the pollsters and not the insiders.”

“It’s never easy to concede. I’ve not won every election and when you don’t win it’s really hard.”

Quinn said he will put together a veto session agenda for the “budget situation” and the “jobs situation.”

Asks that legislators in both parties in both chambers “not be timid” on reform.

Said he thinks AllKids will be in place “as long as I’m around.”

“You know, when you’re down 13 points, nobody’s throwing rosebuds at you.” Best line of the day.

Said he sees a tax increase as “revenue investments in people.” … “Investing in education pays great dividends.”

Said the Hispanic vote was “very, very important… and really made a big difference.”

“We have a lot of work to do in Illinois and I’m ready to do it.”

* End.

…Adding… Bill Brady’s concession letter to supporters is here.

    Baby, its cold outside

  2. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:34 pm:

Is there any angle (inside or outside) from which the JRT looks like an attractive building?

  3. - I don't want to live in Teabagistan - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:35 pm:

Well, the scaffolding is gone and so is the steel the granite was attached to.

  4. - Double Secret Anon - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:36 pm:

Someone go hold a CapFax sign in the background.

  5. - Leroy - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:37 pm:

“Residents across the state and the nation have sent a very strong message this week by electing more Republicans to serve in six new seats in the Illinois House.”

did they send a stronger message by sending back 64 Democrats?

  6. - I don't want to live in Teabagistan - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:38 pm:

What Tom Cross didn’t say: the state GOP in IL did much worse than most midwestern states. I promised a lot more than i delivered. I hope no one noticed.

  7. - Vote Quimby! - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:42 pm:

Voters “across the nation” sent 6 GOPers to the Illinois House? Now, there’s voter integrity! /s

  8. - Vote Quimby! - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:43 pm:

    Has SLC conceded yet?

  9. - dave - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:44 pm:

So cross says absolutely nothing about Quinn winning. No congrats. Nothing.

    Stay classy.

  10. - Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:49 pm:

Wonder if we’ll get any new “Quinnisms” during the conference–if not, a NEW PQ victory dance (and not exlusive to his Blackhawk Stanley Cup celebratory ‘rattlin and ‘rollin) would be fun! Hope someone asks for the latter if there’s not a spontaneous one!

  11. - I don't want to live in Teabagistan - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:50 pm:

We are now 20 minutes late.

  12. - shore - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:52 pm:

I don’t understand why cross is still employed as a republican leader. The entire midwest went blood red yesterday except for illinois. He’s never struck me as a brilliant guy and if you can’t win in a year like this it’s time to say ta ta for tom.

As a sidenote a few years ago some guy made a website touting him for governor. So much for that.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:53 pm:

This is the Lee A. Daniels Show …Cross is going to “win” enough so the caucus won’t bounce him, but enough that MJM loves him as Minority Leader. The play from the LAD playbook.

    Fiasco!

  14. - S - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:54 pm:

Good to see things off to such an efficient start. Maybe he’s busy setting up his lunch date at Manny’s with Sen. Brady? Or getting an update on the special session via phone?

  15. - OneMan - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:55 pm:

== WGN just reported that the presser is running 10-20 minutes late ==

Glad to see he feels he has a mandate to keep schedules like he did before.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:59 pm:

Quinn is the professor you had in college that was 5 minutes late for class, spoke off the cuff, long windedly, and then the next class the Teaching Assistant had to get the class back on track.

The class was a mess, you liked the professor, but in the end, you found yourself scratching you head and wondering “what just happened?”

  17. - Give Me A Break - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:59 pm:

In the time we have been waiting for this to start, Quinn has created 2,000,000,000 new jobs.

  18. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:59 pm:

Was Quinn told they wouldn’t break away from their regular programming so he’s waiting to make it to the 4 o clock news live? Looks like.

  19. - I'm Just Saying - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 3:59 pm:

There’s that Same Damn Purple time again :)

  20. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:02 pm:

FYI, only CBS2 is carrying this live and they’re preempting Judge Judy. ABC7 has their news but is running a package from Brady’s presser earlier. Oh CBS2 just cut away already. They said Quinn will be a guest on CBS News at 10.

  21. - Deep South - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:03 pm:

Who’s that guy in the cream colored shirt making a phone call…or several?

  22. - Responsa - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:04 pm:

    he likes movements

  23. - Amalia - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:04 pm:

sincere, but round and around and almost Daley like in his speech.

  24. - Responsa - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:05 pm:

you need a governor who believes in democracy

  25. - Wally - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:09 pm:

Quinn wants to get the citizens of Illinois back to work.

The Olin Corporation announces they are shipping a 1000 jobs from the metro east area to Mississippi.

Better get to work fast Pat!

  26. - dave - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:11 pm:

Interesting… Bambanek wants the 53rd Senate seat (Rutherford’s). Heh.

  27. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:14 pm:

Wally, Olin praised Quinn’s efforts. The problem wasn’t Quinn. Wasn’t even the union leaders. Members refused to vote for concessions.

  28. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:16 pm:

Uhhhh… what about that guy holding the Quinn sign looked homeless?

Responsa, I laughed at that “need a governor who believes in democracy” line too. Oh Quinn. I’m also curious who the reporter (if it was a reporter) was that asked about the pets. That seemed kind of harsh.

  29. - Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:17 pm:

Sounds like he was punctual, direct, and to the point (ha ha)–classic, sterling Quinn Show performance–ya gotta love it. Can’t wait till Manny’s Deli get-together happens…later today, Monday? Does anybody know, ‘cuz THAT’LL be a Circus everybody and their Uncle will want to either stop by in person to see or at least see on TV!

  30. - I don't want to live in Teabagistan - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:18 pm:

Yeh, that’s probably why my post was deleted.

  31. - Wally - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:23 pm:

I understand Rich. And, in the end, 1000 jobs are leaving the state.

  32. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:25 pm:

Yep. It sucks. I even begged them to stay when they called to say their fax didn’t come through properly a few weeks ago. lol

  33. - Segatari - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:26 pm:

    http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/11/democratic-us-rep-melissa-bean.html

Something that has gotten no attention at all today. IL US House Seat #8 is still undecided as Walsh has a 300-400 lead over Bean with absents still being counted.

  34. - matt - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:28 pm:

Got to shake his hand and personally congratulate him! Hurray!

  35. - Double Secret Anon - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:29 pm:

Would this be a down day for Dean Martinez?

  36. - Responsa - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:32 pm:

That presser was just classic Quinn from beginning (late) to end.

This may get me deleted but hey, it’s Friday afternoon…. Can you even imagine what his sons must have been thinking that day when he sat them down, and in his rambling folksy style tried to esplain the facts of life to them?

  37. - Both Sides Now - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:32 pm:

Is there a place we can see the video of Quinn’s speech?

  38. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:34 pm:

The Pantagraph said Bill will be heading on a vacation to Florida soon so who knows when/if the Manny’s meet-up will happen. I doubt Bill is dying to make a trip up to Chicago anytime soon.

  39. - Quinn T. Sential - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:36 pm:

    {The problem wasn’t Quinn. Wasn’t even the union leaders. Members refused to vote for concessions.}

How much money would be saved under the budget if he shipped 1,000 state employees to Mississippi as well?

  40. - siriusly - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:37 pm:

Another election story that went un-noticed is that RRB’s strategy of tarnishing brand Madigan has succeeded. Lisa and Mike are both out of power now.

  41. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:40 pm:

BSN, I haven’t found any yet. I’ll post when I do. If you see something, make sure to tell us.

    siriusly, too funny.

  42. - Rich Miller - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:41 pm:

DSA, it’s probably a bigger downer for Mr. Ochoa.

  43. - Northsider - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

Here’s some potentially low-hanging fruit for Gov.-(re)elect Quinn.

Wisconsin has suspended the $810 million construction project of higher-speed rail from Milwaukee to Madison (this is the extension of Hiawatha service, so it does affect Chicago) because voters north of the Cheddar Curtain chose Scott Walker, the Republican who has vowed to kill the project.

Along with the trackwork, Talgo, the Spanish passenger railcar manufacturer, was to locate a plant in Milwaukee to build trainsets for the new and expanded service — part of its overall investment in the U.S. market.

Gov. Quinn, if Wisconsin doesn’t want that $810 million or the Talgo plant, let’s grab them for the Prairie State. Surely, we can use the money and the jobs here.

  44. - Statesman - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:53 pm:

DSA- Ochoa probably feels like he just went to Arlington and bet on the fat ponies to win (Alexi too.). Wonder if his godfather Luis G can help him now?

  45. - cassandra - Friday, Nov 5, 10 @ 4:59 pm:

I think Quinn is overpromising on the jobs front. It really isn’t the role of politicians to create jobs (well, government jobs, of course, but there are limits). When they pretend that it is, they often offer false hope. There are significant structural problems in the US and particularly the Midwest economy which no politician can fix on his/her own. It’s up to the private sector. And they are waffling.

As to Quinn’s education tax increase, ha, how will education benefit. Will education get more of the money? How much more, and more than what?
Will education providers be required to meet higher standards-or any standards at all-in order to get the money or will it be cash for status quo. And so forth.

Even though he’s been in office for two years, this governor is so untested.
